Program Overview

The Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) in Fine Arts Education is designed for individuals seeking initial educator certification in P-12 art education or theatre (drama) education who already hold an undergraduate degree in their desired field of certification or a closely related area. In this Master’s degree program, candidates learn to design and implement data-driven learning experiences tailored to meet the differentiated needs of P-12 students. Emphasis is placed on strengthening candidates’ commitment to professional ethics and behaviors, the candidate’s role in creating a safe, student-centered learning environment for all P-12 learners, and leveraging the arts to positively impact P-12 school communities and instructional practice. Upon successful program completion, candidates will be recommended for clear renewable Georgia educator certification at level T-5.

Career Opportunities

Successful completion of the M.A.T. program and passing scores on the appropriate Georgia Assessments for the Certification of Educators (GACE) basic skills and content tests allow the candidate to be recommended to the Georgia Professional Standards Commission for teacher certification at the T-5 level (i.e., the letter “T” indicates that the certificate is in a teaching field and the number “5” indicates that the candidate’s highest degree is a master’s degree recognized by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission).

Admission Requirements

• A Bachelor’s degree in theatre or a closely related field or a minimum of 15 semester hours of upper level coursework in theatre 

• Minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.75 (regular admission) or 2.50 (provisional admission) on all undergraduate work at an accredited institution in fulfillment of the requirements for a baccalaureate degree.
